6 Sacred Temples to Visit in Uttarakhand
Char Dham Opens for 2026
The Char Dham Yatra, comprising Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, is the pinnacle of spiritual travel in Uttarakhand. However, Devbhoomi Uttarakhand (Land of the Gods) offers a wealth of other ancient and spiritually significant temples that travellers can explore along these routes.
Here are 6 remarkable temples to include in your journey:
Tungnath
Located in the Rudraprayag district at an altitude of 3,680 meters, Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world. It is the third temple in the sacred Panch Kedar circuit and is believed to be over 1,000 years old. Built in the North Indian Himalayan architectural style, it features intricate stone carvings and is accessible via a 3.5 km trek from Chopta.
Triyugi Narayan

Situated at an altitude of 1,980 meters in Rudraprayag, this temple is famous as the site where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married. A unique feature is the Akhand Dhuni, a perpetual fire believed to have been burning for three eras (yugas) since the divine wedding. Devotees often carry the ashes as a blessing for a happy married life.
Lakhamandal
Located in the Dehradun district near Yamunotri, Lakhamandal is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is historically linked to the Mahabharata, believed to be the site of the Lakshagriha (wax house) where Duryodhana plotted to burn the Pandavas alive. The temple is famous for its graphite Shiva Linga that sparkles when water is poured on it.
Kalpeshwar Mahadev

The last of the Panch Kedar temples, Kalpeshwar is situated in the Urgam Valley. It is the only Panch Kedar temple that remains open year-round, even during heavy winter snowfall. Here, the matted locks (Jata) of Lord Shiva are worshipped within a natural cave.
Omkareshwar Temple

Located in Ukhimnath, it serves as the winter abode for the deities of both Kedarnath and Madhyamaheshwar. Located at an elevation of 1,300 meters, this temple allows devotees to continue their worship during the months when the high-altitude shrines are inaccessible due to snow.
Koteshwar Mahadev

Located just 3 km from Rudraprayag, this is a natural cave temple on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Legend has it that Lord Shiva meditated in this cave while hiding from the demon Bhasmasura. The cave features self-manifested (swayambhu) Shiva Lingas and provides a serene environment for meditation.
